How to Outline:
An outline presents a picture of the main ideas and the supporting ideas of a paragraph. The skill of outlining will help you organize and remember what you hear or read.
1. Write your name, date, period in the upper RIGHT CORNER.
2. Write the Chapter number and Title centered on the top line.
3. Skip two lines, and then use Roman numerals (I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X) to write the main topics (section headings) at the LEFT MARGIN. These main topic headings appear in GREEN PRINT in each chapter.
4. Use a CAPITAL LETTER before each subtopic (A, B, C, D …). INDENT subtopics under the main topics.
5. Use ARABIC NUMBERS (1, 2, 3, 4 …) for each detail under subtopics.
Sample Outline Format:
Chapter Number & Title
I. Main topic
A. Subtopic
1. Detail
2. Second Detail
B. Next Subtopic
What your outline must have:
1. Main idea of each paragraph (UNDERLINED)
2. New vocabulary in bold print (CIRCLED)
3. Answers to all section objectives (BRACKETED & MARKED WITH A *)
4. All assigned charts/tables WITHIN EACH SECTION
5. All assigned labeled drawings WITHIN THE RIGHT SECTION & NOT AT THE END!
